The land of opportunity?

Two days ago I was approved to be a Permanent Resident of the United States of America. This is the much coveted Green Card. Of course, I was awarded one because I got married to Carolyn, and through a somewhat unpleasant series of checks and a final interview, the INS determined that our marriage was in good faith. (Which, if they hadn’t, Carolyn’s family was ready to personally go yell at the officer responsible.)

I am extremely happy that I have a Green Card now, since this makes planning our future together much easier and stress-free than before.

However, the fact that this is a first step onto a path that could (and normally does, I think) eventually lead to me becoming an American citizen gives me pause. And not only because I disagree with the current political climate here (but then again, I also disagree with the current political climate in Italy): that will change in time, there will be governments that are more to my liking, and some that are less so. If anything, the idea of being able to influence, albeit in a small way, the outcome of future elections is positive.

It has more to do with identity, I think. I do not know whether becoming an American citizen will allow me to keep my Italian citizenship as well. I think that I would never want to give up my Italian identity. Mostly, I haven’t fully digested what the change will mean to me. I have two years’ time to do it.

As a congratulations card, my friend Clementine gave me an American flag card containing a California lottery ticket. It seemed very poignant, the whole land of opportunity symbolism. So here it is. Maybe if you look at it bigger you’ll see what I won…

That’s right: another opportunity!
