Dream Act September 2007
It is a massive amnesty that extends to the millions of illegal aliens who entered the United States before the age of 16. The illegal alien who applies for this amnesty is immediately rewarded with "conditional" lawful permanent resident (green card) status, which can be converted to a non-conditional green card in short order. Many identify themselves as Americans and want to have the opportunity to create productive and fulfilling lives for themselves here in the United States. By completing high school and staying away from crime, these individuals are proving they are on the right path. Plus, the bill allows illegals to get in-state tuition rates -- so illegals get even better treatment than American citizens and our tax dollars pay their way.
It would have repealed the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, which barred states from granting in-state tuition to illegal aliens unless they provide the same discount to all U.S. Under the Dream Act, that would be no problem: It would retroactively repeal the 1996 law - I can make a compelling argument that there is more of a subsidy paid by American taxpayers for a homegrown software engineer for his High School and college education (assuming he goes to public/state schools) is paid for taxpayers. On the other hand if an immigrant/H1b comes to the country he has either paid for his own education or it has been susidized by a foreign country.
They are convinced that giving a break to blameless young men and women - maybe about a million - who want to earn a college degree or serve in the military weakens the country instead of strengthening it. Their hostility to nurturing a new cohort of American citizens, their reflexive -no- even to this limited attempt at immigration decency, lays bare the bankruptcy of their self-defeating passions. All they want is to be able to apply any internship or scholarship that they wanted. This is obscene if they want to go to college they can go in their own homeland where their own people pay taxes for their education. Please NO freebies we must instill the values of hard work and not committing crimes pays off, why should we foot the bill for criminals to go to college?
