There is so much misinformation floating around about how a U.S. citizen that’s enough to be sick. So this article is going to give you the straight facts directly from the mouth of the American government itself. Yes, some of this stuff is open to interpretation, but most of it is pretty straightforward. Hopefully this article gives you a thorough picture of what is needed.

To begin, you must live in the United States and currently reside for a certain period of time. How much time? Unfortunately, this is one of the gray areas, no one can give a definitive answer. But believe me, the better for at least one year or more.

You should also stay in one district when the USCIS. USCIS stands for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration. In other words, if you live in an area the U.S. is not one of these districts, you can not file for citizenship. You should be able to read, write and speak English. This is straightforward and there is no room for compromise here. If you can not read, write and speak English, you need to learn. With regard to the skill, which is one of the gray areas.

You also need a knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government. This is probably one of the hardest parts of the examination to become a citizen. You’d be surprised how many people born in this country who do not know anything about our government.

The next requirement is that you are of good moral character. Yes, they can refuse your citizenship if they think you are immoral.

Finally, you have to believe in the principles of the U.S. Constitution and a favorable attitude toward the United States. And believe me, they will investigate you, your family and everyone you know to determine if you are loyal to this country.
